A Better City (ABC) Toronto: Toronto Must Fully Fund Policing and Fill All Vacancies

May 7, 2026

Toronto, ON May 7, 2026 – Today, ABC Toronto called for full and immediate funding of the Toronto Police Service and a directive to fill all existing vacancies without delay. Toronto cannot afford a hollowed-out police force. With hundreds of officer vacancies, community safety is being compromised: Residents in Scarborough are seeing a rise in petty theft, those in the downtown face open drug use and violence, and those in Rosedale and Forest Hill should not have to live in fear of home invasions.

Our plan:

  • Fully fund all approved positions in the police budget
  • Launch an accelerated recruitment and retention program
  • Improve officer deployment to high-need areas
  • Increase transparency around staffing levels and response times

Public safety is the foundation of a functioning city. Without it, everything else suffers. Toronto must be safe, and that starts with a fully staffed police service.
