ABC Toronto challenges Olivia Chow and Chris Alexander to sign the pledge before Tuesday’s Board of Trade debate
TORONTO, September 21, 2026 – Forty-four candidates for Toronto mayor and city council have now signed A Better City Toronto’s candidate pledge, committing to prioritizing economic development, mobility, safety, affordability and accountability at City Hall.
Brad Bradford is the only mayoral candidate to sign.
On Tuesday night, the leading mayoral candidates meet at the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s mayoral debate. ABC Toronto is calling on Mayor Olivia Chow and Chris Alexander to sign before they walk on stage.
“Forty-four candidates agreed to make our five simple commitments a priority,” said Kelly Aizicowitz, spokesperson for A Better City Toronto. “Grow the economy. Get people moving. Keep people safe. Make the city affordable. Answer for how the money gets spent. None of that is controversial. If the mayor and Chris Alexander can’t put their names to it before Tuesday night, voters deserve to know why.”
Tuesday’s debate is built around the economy: jobs, investment, congestion and cost. That’s the pledge. The debate is an opportunity for candidates to show they’ll govern on the basics instead of talking around them.
“The mayor doesn’t govern alone,” Aizicowitz added. “Council is where this either gets done or doesn’t. Every candidate for council that signs is a signal to voters that they’ll advocate for a City Hall that fixes the basics first.”
