Toronto has become hard to get around. Driving takes forever, and the TTC isn’t much better. The subways have slow zones, and the streetcars have become a punchline. It’s often faster to walk than to take the streetcar. And that’s when they actually arrive. We can’t go on like this. Toronto needs real action to get Toronto moving again:
- Smart traffic lights – Use technology so streetcars can trigger a green light when they arrive and are ready to move.
- Smarter traffic officer deployment at major congestion points. A new major investment needs to be made into traffic wardens and that they be deployed in a smarter and more timely way during rush hour and major events to get the City moving.
- Block a road, pay more. All construction that blocks a street should be incentivized to remove the blockage as quickly as possible. This should include both City works crews and TTC/Metrolinx.
- Modern switches – Replace outdated manual switches that are up to 8x slower than new ones.
- Vigorously enforce rules against lane blocking in rush hour.
